So, I have this SFH in Arizona that we’ve been renting out for vacations… We’ve had it for a few years and have been pleased with the length of time we’ve had it rented. Believe it or not, we’ve had summer tenants.
Utility costs have been a source of frustration for me. It’s the gas bill for renters who use the heated pool in the winter, and the electric bill from the air conditioner in the summer (just got one for July – $472!!!).
So far, managing the winter tenant has been easier because it isn’t a VRBO and we’ve written into the rental agreement that they will pay anything over $100. But it doesn’t appear like I have that kind of freedom with VRBO renters to write in a utility contingency.
I’m thinking of installing a Nest thermostat and a remote pool pump monitor in the house so I can keep an eye on where the renters have set the temperature.
Look, I want my renters to be able to enjoy a heated pool in the winter and be cool in the summer, but our revenue is being drained by these electricity expenses….

Is there a cleaning fee with Vrbo?
Almost every Vrbo property charges a cleaning fee to offset the costs of cleaning their rentals after visitors have left. It’s an additional price that’s added to the total booking fee and remains the same regardless of how many people reserve a vacation property or how long they stay.
The cleaning price is determined by the hosts and varies depending on the location, size of the property, and rates charged by the cleaner. Basic cleaning, laundering bedding, replenishing supplies, and anything else that assists the owner in cleaning and preparing their rental for their next guests could be included.
Not all hosts charge a cleaning fee because they believe it raises the price of their booking too much. Then they either perform their own cleaning (which is a lot of labor) or pay for a cleaning service themselves.
Consider the essential elements of your rentaltype of property, its size, and your target audience before deciding whether or not to impose a Vrbo cleaning fee. If you’re presenting your Vrbo listing as a luxury stay, for example, it’s more likely that your guests won’t mind paying a higher cleaning cost.
