Residents have recounted a slew of unpleasant experiences, including not being billed for months, receiving incorrect and/or grossly over-estimated bills, automatic withdrawals of big sums without notice, and more.
Prior to the formal investigation, many people used Facebook communities to tell their stories and vent their frustrations.
Hundreds of postings and comments about the high cost of utilities have been made on the New Paltz Community Facebook page.
Central Hudson attributed the high pricing to worldwide energy costs and a shoddy implementation of their new billing and customer service system.
A column on their website’s advising page lists the frequently requested pricing issues for 2022. Customers should expect a percentage hike in their monthly price, according to one of the questions in the column.
“In February, natural gas supply costs increased by 33% over January, while electric supply prices more than doubled,” the website said.
Then, in March, natural gas supply prices increased by around 24%, while electricity prices dropped by 46%. Despite the fact that electricity prices have decreased, they are still higher than last year. Analysts predict that energy costs will stay stable in April, with no significant increases or decreases forecast.
Central Hudson also responded to a question regarding what happens to clients who are unable to pay their bills.

County Executive Ryan went on to detail what he wants done as part of the inquiry into Central Hudson, including issues relating to the replacement of their IT systems, an assessment of their billing processes, and their overall efforts in communicating with customers about these bill surges. He also mentions how consumers “were instantly slammed with bills up to 46 percent higher than normal after losing service, and many were forced to spend their finances on emergency housing during the storm.”
There is no deadline for submitting information to the DPS webportal because the investigation is expected to last several months.

If the service is temporarily or permanently suspended due to non-payment of bills, no interest will be paid.
