What does the term “domestic” mean in terms of network data?
Domestic data roaming occurs when your phone switches to a partner network for coverage in places where your regular carrier does not.
Why does my phone say I’m traveling within the United States?
When you roam in a phone network, you are connected to a network that is not your home network.
A home network is where you registered your phone number, while guest networks are any networks outside of it.
Roaming charges apply when you leave your home network and join to one of the guest networks.
Most phone companies no longer charge for domestic roaming, that is, roaming within the United States.
However, depending on the international plan you choose, they charge roaming costs for overseas trips.
This also applies to cruise lines; if you want to use your phone outside of the United States, you’ll have to pay extra for an international roaming plan.
Is roaming within the United States free?

Is AT&T’s domestic roaming service free?
I’d be pleased to explain roaming to you. Domestic roaming occurs when you are no longer linked to the AT&T network, either because of a lack of coverage or because your handset is connected to a nonAT&T tower due to a stronger signal at your location. Off-Network usage is another term for this. There is no extra charge for domestic roaming, although there are some restrictions. Please refer to your Wireless Customer Agreement for information on your data plan’s off-network allowance.
After 400MB of Off-Network data roaming, your Off-Network data access will be limited until the next billing cycle begins. Voice calls, text messages, and Wi-Fi access will not be affected by the Off-Network data restriction. When you hit 400MB while Off Network, we’ll send you a text message to let you know. Data access will be restored after you reconnect to our network.
Is it better to leave my data roaming turned on or off?
What is data roaming, and how does it work? When you use a different mobile network to access the internet on your phone while still being charged by your regular carrier. Because data roaming can be costly, many experts advise individuals to switch it off while traveling. This can be done on an iPhone, for example, by going to settings and selecting general, then network. Then you may turn data roaming on and off.

When your phone disconnects from your carrier’s network and connects to another network, data roaming happens. When you’re roaming, you can make calls, send messages, and utilize wireless data even if you’re not connected to your network. The disadvantage is that roaming data normally entails additional charges on your account.
As an example, let’s pretend you’re planning a trip to London. As soon as you get off the plane, signal bars appear, allowing you to phone a Lyft car to pick you up from the old Heathrow airport. This occurs because your cellphone carrier has a roaming agreement in place with an English network to offer you with service. All of this will happen automatically if you have the roaming option enabled.
What is the best way to tell if your phone is roaming?
Relax: your Android phone will notify you if it is roaming. When you’re outside your cellular provider’s service area, a Roaming icon shows in the status area at the top of the screen. The icon varies each phone, but it usually includes the letter R in some way, similar to what is displayed in the image.
