What caused my Spectrum bill to increase in 2021?

Beginning in June, most Charter Spectrum cable TV and home phone customers may expect to pay more.

Customers of the nation’s second-largest cable operator will be notified of a monthly price rise on June 2, 2021. Increases to the broadcast TV cost, the TV Select, Silver, and Gold packages, and set-top box equipment fees are among the adjustments.

The monthly rate for broadcast television will increase by more than 9%, from $16.45 to $17.99 per month. The rise is the second in less than a year for the broadcast surcharge. The monthly additional cost increased from $13.50 to $2.95 in August.

Spectrum cable users will now pay $215.88 per year for broadcast television as a result of this increase.

Is it possible to decrease Spectrum?

Brian Morgan of Reading, Ohio, had been a long-time Time Warner Cable user before switching to Spectrum last year, like millions of other individuals.

At first, he said, Spectrum was amazing, with quicker internet connections than he’d ever had before. Then there was the bill.

“When Spectrum took control, there was a $5.50 fee rise immediately away, with no warning,” Morgan added.

Worse, he claims, when his prior Time Warner promo deal expired, his price increased still further.

So he called, but Spectrum customer support told him that unlike Time Warner, they no longer negotiate a new promotional plan with him.

“I’ve been with you people for 30 years, and that’s the best you can do?” I exclaimed. ‘Take it or leave it,’ they said “he stated

  • “My bill went increased $20, to $180,” Lori Zimmer wrote in an email.
  • “Our bill recently went up from $170 to $185,” Brad Williamson said.
  • “Our bill went up $30 this month,” Bob Weidlich remarked.

We reached out to Spectrum, and spokesperson Michael Pedelty indicated that nearly half of the company’s Cincinnati customers are seeing a $1 rise in each of the following fees this month:

  • Surcharge for broadcast television (the fee to show local stations)
  • Receiver of the electromagnetic spectrum (which is required on every TV)

So, depending on how many receivers and DVRs you have in your home, your bill should increase by $4 to $10.

Pedelty warned, though, that if you’re coming off a Time Warner promotion that’s about to expire, your rate adjustment may be as much as $30.

You have a few options if the recent price increase is too much for you. (Keep in mind that Spectrum will not negotiate new promotional packages in the same way that Time Warner did.)

1. Call Spectrum and inquire about downgrading from a higher tier to a lower one, such as from Gold to Silver or Silver to Basic.

You’ll miss a few channels, including several ESPN sports channels, MTV, VH-1, and a few others, but you might be able to save $25 each month on your cable bill.

2. Cancel your DVR service and save $13 per month if you rarely use it and prefer to watch your shows on demand.

3. Switch to internet-only service and become a “cord cutter,” streaming Netflix and Hulu and only paying for internet.

However, keep in mind that the normal pricing for internet-only service is currently $65 per month, so you probably don’t want to sign up for too many streaming services.

4. Call Cincinnati Bell to see if Fioptics is available in your area (they are in about 60 percent of Cincinnati area homes).

If that’s the case, they’ll normally give you a first-year deal for cable and local channels, phone, and high-speed internet for roughly $100 per month. (I predicted that the rate will rise after a year.)

5. Cut the chord, and I don’t mean just a little bit.

Disconnect cable and connect a TV antenna with the help of a wire cutter. You’ll be able to watch 9 On Your Side as well as roughly 20 other free-to-air stations.

6. Use your phone’s data plan for internet if you actually cut the cord. Simply ensure that it includes a large amount of data each month.
