When two parties, such as roommates or business partners, share responsibility for the account, or when a legal representative, such as a lawyer or carer, takes over the responsibility, people place two names on a utility bill. In addition to paying the bill, the second person becomes the point of contact in the event of an emergency and has the authority to make changes to the account, including canceling it. Putting two names on a utility account is not difficult once both parties agree to share responsibility. Typically, both parties must inform the utility company over the phone or in person.

Is it necessary to have joint electric bills?
Unless you live in an apartment or condo with utilities included, the most common costs are phone, gas, electric, cable TV, and Internet. You should definitely put both names on these bills if one of you has never received a gas or electric bill in his or her name. If one of you passes away, the surviving spouse will still require service, but utilities typically want a deposit if you have no previous experience with them. This problem is avoided by having both names on the bill. If you get a landline, make sure it’s in both of your names, as is the cable bill. You may want to keep your cell phones separate if you have them.
Are death certificates required by utility companies?
Electricity and Gas If all you wish to do is change the name on the account without halting the supply, this can be done by letter and will usually not require a death certificate. You’ll need the property’s address as well as the account numbers.
When does Puget Sound Energy send you a bill?
Yes!
The Budget Payment Plan smooths out monthly energy prices, resulting in predictable bills all year round, avoiding seasonal increases.
Based on prior energy usage, we calculate the entire annual energy cost at your location, split it by 12 months, and bill for the average monthly cost.
If you’ve only been at the address for a few months, the monthly average payment will represent prior occupants’ usage. The monthly average payment will be based on usage at similar places if the location is new construction.
In March, June, and November, we examine your actual energy usage and monthly payment amount. Your monthly Budget Payment Plan payment amount may grow, decrease, or keep the same if your actual energy usage is more or lower than the estimate.
We calculate if you have overpaid or underpaid for real energy consumption for the entire year in June (from June to June). If you overpaid, you will be refunded or given a credit. You will be billed for the unpaid balance if you have not paid on time.
