The Great Wolf Lodge, a massive water park hotel set to debut in 2016, is still under construction along Harbor Boulevard in Garden Grove. California is also in the midst of the greatest drought in history, which is now in its fourth year. On Saturday, the city went into Stage 2 Water Alert due to the necessity for conservation. The environmental impact papers don’t mention how much water the 603-room luxury complex will use. Both of them were reviewed by The Weekly in 2009 and 2010. The project is so large that it required its own water supply assessment study, as required by state law.
The Great Wolf Lodge, together with a restaurant planned next door, will require 149,500 gallons of water per day, according to the October 2010 assessment, which calls it “atypical” compared to other Anaheim hotels. PER DAY, that’s more than half an acre-foot of water. The figures are conservatively based on the expectation that the hotel resort will be a huge hit with guests, ensuring year-round occupancy.
Will the city’s water supply be strained during dry periods? Bill Murray, Public Works Director and Interim Water Manager, says, “No, we have the infrastructure, the pumping and importation capabilities to deliver the water” (not the actor, alas). Even when factoring for three consecutive dry yearsbut not four, and certainly not to this degreethe analysis released a year before the record drought began concluded the same through 2029-2030.
Garden Grove, however, is forced to make significant sacrifices due to the drought. Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in January and ordered stringent water restrictions the following month. The city must cut its water consumption by 28%. In a recent Associated Press investigation, the city’s water troubles made national attention.
“That will become a problem, and if the water park plays a role in it, it will be a minor one,” Murray adds. He claims the city utilized 26,400 acre-feet of water last year (one acre-foot equals 325,851 gallons). They almost utilized 29,000 AFY in 2010.
“We’d have to cut the equivalent of another fifty water park hotels,” Murray adds, based on figures from last year. “Yes, the water park complicates our efforts to fulfill the Governor’s obligatory reduction, but we already have a significant problem.” The Great Wolf Lodge did not respond to a request for comment from The Weekly.
A first step is to enter a Stage 2 Water Alert. Murray recognizes that building a massive water park while restricting households’ water use will irritate some locals. The hotel resort caters specifically to tourists, with expensive admittance based on the rental of a room.
“Is it fair that, while homeowners are encouraged to save water, the Great Wolf Lodge is allowed to consume over 500,000 gallons each week?” “No way!” exclaims Josh McIntosh. “Our leaders have never required that our new hotels and projects meet the strictest environmental requirements.” The Garden Grove homeowner has been a vocal opponent of the project’s free land and large subsidies for years.
“When the entitlements were completed, there was no problem,” Murray adds. “The horse has already escaped the confines of the corral.”

The cutting-edge facility uses roughly 380,000 gallons of water, which is splashed, sprayed, waved, and played in by both children and adults.

Bottled water is pricey at Great Wolf Lodge, as it is in many other places. We suggest bringing your own (which you can do inside the waterpark) or bringing refillable bottles. You can replenish your water bottles at the waterpark’s water fountains. Refilling your bottles is usually available in the exercise center.
Is Great Wolf Lodge’s water chlorinated or salty?

The souvenir cup bargain at Great Wolf Lodge is fantastic! It may not appear to be much, but with limitless refills on the day of purchase, it’s a great way to save money.
Inside the water park, there are snack stands with quick refill stations. This was the best thing we could have done, especially with our five children who were always thirsty.
During your stay, the cup offers FREE Coca-Cola and ICEE product refills (where available). It was $12.99, and even better, it may be used for future visits at a reduced refill price.
We still have our cup and plan to use it on our next trip. Keep in mind that food not purchased on the premises is not permitted within the water park at Great Wolf Lodge.
Is it permissible to wear a shirt at Great Wolf Lodge?
For the 84-degree water park, we recommend bringing swimming suits, aqua socks, or flip flops. Our resort is considered casual, although we do require that guests wear shirts and shoes outside of the water park.
What kind of footwear should I bring to Great Wolf Lodge?
- Children under the age of 48 inches must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.
- Closed-toe shoes with rubber soles, such as athletic shoes, are required. There are no flip-flops or open-heeled shoes allowed. The laces of your shoes must be knotted.
- T-shirts, long pants, or long shorts, as well as loose, comfortable, casual attire that covers you and allows you to move around, should be worn.
- Prior to participating, make sure all loose items are secured. Pockets must be completely empty. There are no cell phones, cameras, or other anything that can fall off the course allowed.

- This is a high-adrenaline ride. While moving forward, backward, and side to side, riders will experience rapid acceleration and deceleration.
How severe are the height requirements at Great Wolf Lodge?
- During the ride, each rider must have the physical and mental competence to stay in the supine posture and control their limbs.
- It is necessary to wear appropriate swimwear. Swimming trunks with plastic or metal rivets or decoration are prohibited.
- Riders must recline back against the flume, feet first, chin down, knees crossing at the ankles, arms crossed over the chest, hands on opposite shoulders, elbows in.
- This is a fast-paced thrill coaster. While going forward and side to side, riders will experience fast acceleration and deceleration.
- Failure to follow these guidelines could result in injury to yourself or others, as well as expulsion from the water park.
