Discord calls, as far as we know, are not recorded. While a nation state might theoretically record them, why would they? Discord uses end-to-end encryption. Discord is used by millions of individuals every year for millions of hours of chat. Even if those calls were recorded, the storage costs would be prohibitive.
Discord may theoretically record your calls. All calls are encrypted and routed through Discord servers. According to Discord’s privacy policy, they may save messages and VoIP data to assist them maintain services, but not real voice calls.
An previous Discord staff member’s Reddit post attempted to clarify the situation regarding privacy. It read:
- When you choose to remove images/files from our servers, they are immediately erased from our servers. They can still be stored in cloudflare or locally, but they’re gone from Discord and will be gone from elsewhere once the cache clears.
- We don’t keep track of any server activities. We value privacy greatly, and we only intrude it when someone complains illegal or ToS-violating behavior and offers reliable proof to support their claim. Even then, we only look at the evidence that supports the claim. We never join a server with the intention of hunting for infractions or reading chat logs.
- We don’t keep an eye on voice or video chat. I’m not sure if that’s physically possible, but there’s no way we’d ever do it.
- Encryption is used for both audio and visual communications. It’s possible that if a bot joins the call, they’ll record it, however that sounds really difficult and would be very clear if it’s a bot account. It would be far easier to simply take a screenshot, but you’d still need to be a call participant to do so.
Discord, in essence, has no interest in retaining any more information than is required for marketing and the operation of its services. It is self-funded, backed by investors and Discord Nitro, and has no financial incentive to acquire data. Especially since any report of phone recording or excessive data collection would cause users to depart.
Do Bill’s calling applications show up?
When you use an app on your phone to send text messages, you’re using your phone company’s data services. Your bill will not include messages or calls made through the app. Instead, you’ll see the device that used the data from the mobile service as well as the amount of data used.
If both the sender and the receiver are not using the same app, your selected messenger will send your texts using antiquated 1990s SMS or MMS channels. Instead of sending your communication via the internet, you’re sending it through your mobile provider’s unencrypted and logged service.
The previous list of messengers does not have or may be configured to not use SMS fallback.

The overlay is a graphical layer that may be applied to any game that is connected to Discord. It’s a graphical user interface layer that you may move around your screen to display chat, reactions, and other useful information. It works in the same way as a WoW GUI addon or anything similar, except it’s all inside within Discord.
The overlay is where you go if you don’t have numerous monitors or want to monitor Discord on your phone.
Setting up the Discord Overlay
Because the overlay is part of Discord, it integrates seamlessly. However, you must first set it up before using it. To run the overlay and your game at the same time, you’ll need a good graphics card, but most modern AMD and Nvidia cards should work OK.
- Make sure the screen icon on the right is not red and select a game from the list of Added Games. If the overlay is disabled, click it to enable it.
After you’ve set up the Discord Overlay, you should be able to play a game while Discord is running in the background, and an extra layer with Discord elements should appear. You can move and pin these around depending on where you want them to display on the screen.
There should be a keybind set automatically to bring up the overlay if you don’t see it in game. On my Discord, it was ‘]’. This was the standard setting. To find yours, go to User Settings and Keybinds. If the overlay does not appear after entering the game, press the key to bring it up.
To keep an overlay window in the desired location over your game, use the small pin symbol in the top right corner. You can do this for a lot of the overlay’s elements. Remove the ones you don’t want and pin the ones you want.
If you want the windows to fit in better with your game, you can also modify their opacity. To change the settings, hover over the gear icon at the top of each overlay box.

It’s simple to use Discord safely with the correct privacy settings and monitoring. When it comes to sites and apps with open chat, though, there is always a risk.
