While it isn’t well known, all of the big television networks have free streaming applications where you can watch many of their most recent series. You’ll have to wait for new episodesup to eight days in some casesand you’ll almost certainly have to endure advertisements, but at least you’ll be able to watch primetime network series without paying a membership.
- CBS has apps for Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, and Android TV that are all free. (Not to be confused with Paramount+, which we’ll talk about in a minute.)
- PBS features free apps for all of the above-mentioned streaming platforms, as well as a free live stream in many markets.
- All of the following platforms, as well as Vizio TVs, have free NBC apps. (Some shows, like Days of our Lives, can be watched for free on Peacock.)
- Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, LG and Vizio TVs, and Xbox One consoles all have free CW apps.
With the exception of PBS, none of these applications will let you view a live stream of your local station without logging in through a pay TV provider. They’re solely good for watching on-demand shows.

The NBC App
The NBC app allows you to watch recent episodes of several new shows for free. They also have older episodes and shows that you may watch on your mobile device.
While live streaming and certain recent episodes do not require a satellite or cable provider, other recent episodes must.
The Fox App
Most Fox series are available to stream the day after they originally aired on the Fox app. Your participating TV provider account, on the other hand, gives you access to more options and live streaming.
The CW App
The CW app is arguably the furthest removed from live television. While they provide free streaming, they only provide access to the five most recent episodes of each show.
Without a cable subscription, mobile apps without TV subscription packages may not provide you with all of your options for watching your favourite local channel’s programming.
They do, however, assist you in increasing the quantity of episodes that you can watch for free on your mobile device.

While some of these services demand a paid subscription, it’s an excellent option for cord cutters or those who don’t want to pay for cable. Almost all of the video you have access to is “on-demand,” meaning you can start and stop it whenever you want, and you can watch almost anything you want with few, if any, ads.
This is especially useful if you don’t feel like sifting through hundreds or thousands of channels (and who does?).
In addition, smart TV apps can give users access to additional services such as social media, online shopping, web browsers, music and media playing, and more.
What are the downsides?
If you’re considering about getting a smart TV, there are only two things to consider: The first is that if you want to watch streaming video, you may need to subscribe to extra streaming services such as Netflix or Hulu. This is especially true if you don’t have access to a home computer with a digital media library you may utilise to create a makeshift film and music collection. (This may be done for free using a service like Plex.)
The second thing to consider is that you will have to maintain yet another piece of technology. The most stable wireless connection isn’t usually Wi-Fi. It’s likely that your TV will lose connectivity or have slow speeds at times, obstructing your experience. To put it another way, they’re just like every other piece of technology: flawed.
What kind of TV should I buy?
After you’ve decided to acquire a smart TV, the following step is the most difficult: deciding which model and brand of TV you want.
The first thing you’ll need to determine is what size television you want. It’s all too simple to purchase a television that is either too big or too little for the area you have available. Finally, you’ll have to decide on a brand: Unless you buy a set during a good bargain, you’ll have to pay more for a name brand like Sony, LG, Philips, or Samsung. However, there are a slew of lesser-known brands, including as Vizio, Sharp, Insignia, Sanyo, and others, that are just as outstanding.
Finally, double-check that you’re buying a “smart” TV with Wi-Fi and app connectivity when you’re out shopping. Because stores still carry a nice mix of the two, it’s easy to buy a TV without this support.
