All residence halls and Lincoln Apartments have been designated as ‘wireless-only’ since the fall of 2011. These buildings do not have wired (Ethernet) Internet connectivity. Only family housing in North Village has a wired Ethernet connection.
Is it possible for you to bring your own microwave to UMass Amherst?
All electrical cords, plugs, and appliances must be in working order. All appliances should have an Underwriters’ label or similar recognized testing laboratory’s mark of approval.
Is there free washing at UMass?
Vending machines can be found in every residence hall. Snacks, chocolates, drinks, dairy goods, bottled water, and sodas are all available from the vending machines. The UCard is accepted by the majority of vending machines, however they also accept dollar bills and change.
Laundry Facilities
In all Residence Halls, students have access to laundry facilities. If students are having problems with the machines in the laundry rooms, please report them to the vendor here.
Is it okay to use Command Strips in the dorms?
It’s difficult to adjust to college life. Whatever you do to prepare for move-in day, you’ll almost certainly forget something! Taylor Coffey, a sophomore at UNC-Chapel Hill and a Carolina Social Influencer, has compiled a list of beneficial goods and helpful hacks that she wishes she had known when she first moved into her first-year residence hall. Hopefully, her checklist will help you have a less stressful move-in day and establish a new home that you adore.
Command Strips and Hooks
If you think you have enough Command Strips, believe me when I say you don’t. It is forbidden to mount anything to the wall with nails, masking tape, or other paint-damaging items in the residence halls. So, if you want to put up any lovely posters, lights, or other decorations, you’ll need the right tools. Find out which Command Strips and Hooks are perfect for your decorations because they come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Surge Protectors
Surge protectors, like Command Strips, can never be too many. The electrical outlets may be in problematic areas depending on how you arrange your space. It is recommended to come equipped with many power extension strips in order to design your room the way you want it and make it efficient at the same time. Only utilize 3-prong surge protectors and extension cords; 2-prong domestic extension cords are not permitted.
Curtain rod and curtain for your bathroom
This tip is for those of you who will be living in a suite. If you live in a suite, you’ll be sharing a bathroom with other people, and unlike hallway-style residence halls, the toilets and sinks are not separated. Another curtain rod and curtain are essential for separating the toilet from the rest of your bathroom. When it comes to privacy, this little hack is crucial. You’ll be able to thank me later! Other sources of lightning
This one may sound strange at first, but it is something you should plan for. The lighting in the residence halls can be a touch harsh at times. Bringing additional lighting sources, such as a table lamp, desk lamp, or even a floor lamp, is quite advantageous. These additional resources can help you relax and focus on your studies. Make sure your desk and floor lighting are single-bulb models rather than halogen or multi-bulb models.
Another Command Hook in your shower
This is another another tip for individuals who will be staying in a suite. Many people are unaware of this hack, but my suitemates and I had a blast with it! You’ll be able to hang some of your shower essentials if you add another robust Command Hook to the corner of your shower. The Command Hook will keep your towel or shower caddy off the bathroom floor, whether it’s a towel or a shower caddy.
Another curtain and curtain rod for your closet
I’m sure you’re thinking something along those lines. Yes, there’s a new curtain rod and a new curtain. If you live in HoJo, Craige, Ehaus, Avery, Parker, or Teague, however, this is a wonderful technique to hide your clothes from being visible within your room (or even to hide the trash in your closet). This is one another trick to help you make your area look more put-together!
Headboard for your bed
So, this one could be a little out of the ordinary. This is a terrific idea if you’re like me and want your room to look extra lovely. To properly complete the look, my roommate and I purchased matching headboards. Of course, a headboard isn’t required, but it certainly adds to the charm, as long as you don’t make any holes in the walls or bed frames!
Batteries!
When it comes to your resident hall, batteries are critical. The majority of the items I purchased were battery-operated. This covers my TV remote, lamp, and LED lighting, among other things. This is something I can assure you of. You’ll need a lot more batteries than you think.
Knowing what is best for you!
This is without a doubt the most crucial hack. Moving into a resident hall for the first time, as previously stated, can be stressful. As a result, you’re attempting to be as prepared as possible. It’s crucial to note, however, that some products/hacks aren’t suitable for everyone! Do not feel forced to purchase everything that is recommended, whether from this list or from any other source. It’s sometimes preferable to wait until you’ve moved in before deciding which products or decorations you’ll require. Don’t feel obligated to follow every piece of advise you’re given because everyone’s vision and aspirations for their resident hall are distinct. Because this will be your new home in the end, it’s critical to design a space that is ideal for you. Congratulations, and welcome to the Carolina clan!

Is it possible to eat fish at UMass Amherst?
Pets are not permitted in the residential halls by residents or guests. Residents are allowed to keep fish as long as they keep them in a tank that is 10 gallons or smaller.
