The truth is that many people erroneously estimate or do not accurately time how long they have been brushing their teeth. This could indicate that they are not brushing their teeth for the recommended amount of time each day.
In fact, data show that the average American only brushes their teeth for 45 to 70 seconds per day, which is less than half the time required!
Brushing for less time can have a negative impact on our oral health over time.
The good news is that most electric toothbrushes feature a built-in timer to assist us in brushing for the proper period of time.

Why does my Oral-B electric toothbrush automatically switch on?
- If the Oral-B toothbrush turns on and off abruptly before continuing to run, this is most likely typical. The professional timer, also known as the pacer/quadpacer/30 second timer, is a device that measures time in seconds.
- A quick, stuttering noise reminds you to clean all four parts of your jaw for the same amount of time at 30 second intervals (upper right, upper left, bottom right, and lower left) (30 seconds).
- You’ve reached the end of the two-minute cleaning time recommended by dentists when you hear a long sputtering noise.
- If your Oral-B toothbrush turns on or off without your input on a regular basis and not during a normal brushing cycle, it needs to be inspected by Oral-B.
