On a broader level, it appears that games and hardware have evolved into CRT technology through time. Visuals are more realistic than they’ve ever been, and the look of a CRT presentation emphasizes that realism even more – aliasing, in instance, is far less of an issue than on a fixed pixel grid LCD. Second, PC hardware has advanced to the point that running at refresh rates higher than 60Hz is pretty straightforward – and many CRT monitors can easily run at much higher frequencies, up to 160Hz and even higher, depending on the display and input resolution. All of this is impressive for a technology that effectively became outdated shortly after the millennium.
And it’s at this point that the disadvantages of CRT gaming become apparent. Because the technology is obsolete, there are numerous pitfalls. The most obvious issue is size: CRT displays are large, thick, and heavy. I purchased a Sony Trinitron FW900, a 16:10 24-inch screen that is widely regarded as one of the best CRTs ever built. As the video indicates, picture quality is excellent, but the screen is also quite large. It weighs 42kg and has a 600x550mm footprint, so it requires a large amount of space.
Then there’s the issue of input. VGA, DVI-I, or component RGB BNC inputs are used by CRT monitors, and the GTX 980 Ti or Titan X Maxwell are the most powerful current GPUs that still support these. Thankfully, HDMI, USB-C, and DisplayPort to VGA adapters are all available, but if you want to go above 1920×1200 at 60Hz, you’ll have to spend a lot of time online hunting for the proper one that can handle high pixel rates. There are very few widescreen CRTs available, and even the Sony FW900 has a 16:10 aspect ratio, so console gaming isn’t particularly suited to CRT displays – 4:3 screens are even worse. Yes, you can run consoles on a CRT, but I believe that this is a quest best suited to PC users for a variety of reasons.
