Is BP identical to Shell?
Shell-Mex and BP Ltd was a British joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell (Shell) and British Petroleum (BP). It was created in 1932 when the marketing operations of both firms in the United Kingdom were merged, partly in response to the severe economic conditions of the time.
In 1976, the main companies consolidated their marketing efforts in the United Kingdom. The following was the announcement of this action:
The goods of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group and the British Petroleum Group have been promoted in the United Kingdom through the Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd. agencies since 1932. The company’s sales in that year totaled around 3 million tons, out of a total UK market of around 7 million tons.
Over the years, the activities of this highly successful company have grown significantly. Shell-Mex and B.P. Ltd. each provided 40 million tons of petroleum to the UK market in 1970, for a total of 100 million tons.
Outside of the United Kingdom, in the vast majority of countries. Shell and BP have always marketed their products through their own independent organizations, and it has been determined that over the next 4-5 years, Shell and BP’s marketing operations in the UK will be brought more in line with this pattern.
Since 1966, independent sales organizations within Shell-Mex and B.P. have operated the Shell and BP Service Station networks. It is currently envisaged to gradually expand this ‘brand streaming’ to include all products and market sectors. This would eventually result in the formation of two viable marketing organizations within Shell-Mex and B.P., allowing the agency relationship to be terminated.
The National Benzole Company will continue to operate under the National brand and will be integrated into the BP marketing organization.
Once brand streaming of direct commerce is basically complete and a plan for the treatment of Authorised Distributors is decided upon, the Supply, Storage, and Delivery functions, as well as the Computer and other services, will be the subject of additional extensive study. If it is agreed that these functions should continue after the sales activities have been transferred, Shell-Mex and B.P. shall continue to perform them.
Shell-Mex and B.P. personnel will be redeployed within the different marketing organizations, with no redundancies as a result of the reorganization.
