Why is it so difficult to open my gas cap?
The gas cap is made to serve two purposes. The first step is to ensure that no gasoline vapor or liquid escapes from the tank. The second job is to keep the pressure inside the fuel cell constant. This pressure is what allows fuel to flow from the tank to the fuel pump, and then to your car. However, there are times when the gas cap fits perfectly on the fuel tank but refuses to come off.
There are three common reasons why your gas cap may become stuck:
The gas cap is vacuum-sealed: In order to deliver fuel to the pump and, eventually, the engine, the fuel tank must maintain consistent pressure inside the fuel cell. The gas tank can generate a vacuum-like seal around the gas cap under a variety of conditions, including extreme heat, severe changes in barometric pressure or altitude, or when the fuel tank is running very low. Because of the high pressure, a vacuum seal forms, making it nearly impossible to remove your gas cap.
The gas cap is cross threaded: A improperly threaded gas cap, similar to a cross threaded bolt or lug nut, can cause the cap to stay, making it nearly hard to remove without tools or breaking it off.
Though the threads do not match up, you can sometimes force the cap on, just like you can force a glass jar lid on even if you are not screwing it on correctly, whether it is due to human mistake or a mechanical problem in the cap or the fuel tank housing.
Damaged locking mechanism: Some gas caps have a locking mechanism that prevents the cap from being removed without a key. Under the conditions described above, however, this lock is vulnerable to damage due to excessive exposure to gas vapors and extreme pressure inside the fuel tank.
The threads in the fuel cell are clogged with debris: If the gas cap and gas tank threading are contaminated with dirt, leaves, or other material, the cap can easily become stuck. This debris has the potential to become entangled in the threading.
When this occurs, more pressure and friction are created, causing the cap to become exceedingly tight and difficult to remove.
Typically, the only option to remove gas caps that have the above concerns is to break the cap or use specialist tools to remove it. To prevent the risk of injuring other components on the fuel cell, it’s always a good idea to have a skilled mechanic remove the damaged gas cap.
