About 12% of all plastics created during the last 65 years (8.3 billion tons) have been burnt, while just 9% have been recycled. The other 79 percent ended up in landfills or the waters. If plastic garbage continues to be thrown into bodies of water, the World Economic Forum projects that by 2050, the oceans will harbor more plastic waste than fish.
“The key to overcoming this problem is to make it more economically appealing to collect and transform plastic trash into higher-value products at a considerably lower conversion cost,” said Dan Hasler, CEO of Hasler Ventures. “Current technologies, such as incineration, pyrolysis, and mechanical recycling, have all been shown to be useless or too expensive, both financially and environmentally. They haven’t been able to attract the necessary private investment on a large enough scale to divert the great majority of the world’s 350 million tons of plastic garbage from landfills each year.
“We believe we can show first at pilot size that hydrothermal processing is a less expensive way to make fuels from plastic than crude oil, making it a profitable endeavor to collect and process plastic and keep it out of landfills and the oceans.”
Purdue’s executive vice president for strategic initiatives and the John A. Edwardson Dean of the College of Engineering, Mung Chiang, said the university has been working hard in this area for a long time.
“Resolving the plastic trash problem will have a significant positive impact on the environment and future generations,” Chiang added.
Hydrothermal liquefaction and efficient separation are part of the newly developed conversion process. After being converted to oil or naphtha, the plastic can be utilized as a feedstock for other chemicals or split into monomers, speciality solvents, and other products. The clean fuels made from the polyolefin waste generated each year can meet 4% of the yearly demand for gasoline and diesel. In 2019, some of Wang’s findings were published in ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering, and in 2020 and 2021, in Fuel. A video of the procedure is available on the internet.
Hasler Ventures is working with American Resources Corp. (NASDAQ:AREC) to showcase the technology at their chromatographic pilot plant in Indiana, which is now under construction.
