There are five ways that gas stations deceive you.
- There’s a problem with the meter. Some gas stations have installed meters that begin ticking even before the gasoline begins to flow from the pipe.
- A fuel hose that is longer than necessary.
- Fingers firmly lodged in the hose’s nozzle.
- Naphtha ingestion is a form of adulteration.
Is it possible to hack a petrol pump?
While stealing is unethical, cheating is occasionally tolerated. As a result, hackers are manipulating petrol pumps at gas stations to dispense the precious liquid for less money or even for free. To be sure, no matter how you look at it, this is still larceny.
How precise is a gas station?
All pumps must meet regulatory accuracy limits ranging from -0.5 percent to +1 percent.
To ensure that no one can tamper with the pumps, they should all be sealed. The same examinations are performed every time the pump is repaired. Additionally, your local trading standards may do random checks on the pumps to ensure that they are working properly.
If you believe the pumps are inaccurate, use resolver to report the problem to your local council’s Trading Standards department. They’ll be able to investigate the problem after that.
- Before beginning your delivery, always double-check that the displays have returned to zero.
- Replace the nozzle and notify the kiosk staff if the display advances before you have delivered any fuel.
- Make certain you’re purchasing the correct fuel grade. On the roadside sign, every garage advertises the price of regular unleaded gasoline. A higher grade of gasoline is also available, although it is more expensive. Make that the unit price displayed on the pump corresponds to what you wish to purchase. The same is true for various diesel grades.
- Make a note of the fee you’ll have to pay once you’ve changed the nozzle. This should be the same pricing as the kiosk’s display. Between finishing delivery and removing the nozzle, the pump display may leap a dime. This can happen for a variety of reasons, and it becomes more likely as fuel prices rise.
How do gas stations steal?
As directed by the petrol pump’s primary manager, I returned to the station today (he was not present that day when I got scammed). He was extremely accommodating and courteous in explaining everything to me. He also got my car filled with Rs 400 worth of gasoline so that I wouldn’t be out of pocket. He also demonstrated their automation system, which records each and every entry with a time stamp.
I was able to view the precise time and date input of Rs 401.50. However, as I previously stated, the gasoline did not reach my vehicle. As I already stated, I was not paying attention that day. I’m guessing the gasoline was poured in another car or container (see Fraud #4 below), therefore I’ll leave it to the petrol station to investigate using their CCTV. In addition, the petrol station offered me the opportunity to undertake a 5-liter fuel test if I so desired.
Please note that I am not blaming BPCL or the manager for what occurred. After meeting with the management and asking all of my questions, I am confident that this incident was caused solely by employee mischief.
Also, I’d like to point out that BPCL was quite quick to resolve my matter, and the petrol pump manager was also very quick to investigate the situation.
This got me thinking about how many of these kind of scams and frauds occur virtually every minute in our country, in almost all of India’s cities, where people are defrauded of tiny sums of money such as $50, $20, or $500….
The majority of those that are defrauded are completely unaware of it. Others who are a little more conscious, and who make a 2 minute scene, may be eligible for a refund, and the case will be closed.
Massive “Small Scams going on across the Petrol Pumps
There are close to 60,00070,000 petrol pumps in our country. Consider how much money is looted by all petrol pumps (leaving those who are clean) even if they commit little scams.
I believe it is so widespread that it could be worth thousands of crores, which has yet to be fully studied.
So, in order to make everyone aware, I began searching the internet, YouTube, and various other platforms such as Team-BHP, Quora, and others for accounts of other people who had been duped, with the goal of compiling a list of different ways in which petrol pump attendants, as well as owners/managers, defraud customers.
Fraud #1Short Fueling by distraction
This is the most prevalent and commonly experienced type of fraud, and it is rather simple to perpetrate if you are not vigilant. Here’s how it works:
You request 500 gallons of gasoline, but the meter reads 100 (the person who filled it before you did so for 100). While you are distracted by another individual, the person tries to show that he is resetting the meter to ZERO. In truth, he does not reset the meter, but instead begins at 100 and works his way up to 500.
So you order for 500 gallons of gasoline, the attendant instructs you to reset the meter to ZERO, then begins filling the tank and stops at 100. When you inquire why he stopped at 100, he claims that he only heard 100. Then he says no problem, he’ll reset and fill another 400 (and then gives some nonsense technical explanation why he can’t continue from where he was).
Someone from his crew distracts you at this time, and the attendant begins filling from 100 onwards, despite the fact that you believe the meter has been reset to ZERO. Then he goes up to 400 dollars and costs you 500 dollars (100 + 400). You only get $400 worth of gasoline for $500.
In each of these techniques, someone distracts you with a PUC, vehicle cleaning, or by simply asking you a dumb question, causing you to look away from the meter.
Unless you make a scene right away, catching them later becomes difficult because the action has already occurred, and you have lost motivation in battling for a few hundred rupees.
Fraud #2Tweaking fuel-dispensing machines using integrated chips
Because an integrated chip is implanted in the machine itself, this is a clear cut fraud from the principal proprietors of the petrol pumps or at the manager level. While the meter indicates the full quantity, this chip ensures that 3 percent less oil is added every time. So, if you ask for 1000 gallons of gasoline, everything will appear to be in order, but you will only receive 970 gallons.
The full cost will be printed on the receipt. This is a little adjustment made within the machine.
Imagine a petrol station with 10,000 customers, each receiving 3% less fuel. How much of a con is that… Multiply it by the hundreds of petrol stations that may be doing the same thing.
Fraud #3Filling the costly version of Oil (Speed / Power) without asking
This isn’t precisely a heist, but it is unethical behavior that most gas stations engage in.
They begin filling the more expensive version of the oil (Speed Petrol or Power Petrol) without the customer’s permission. The unleaded kind of oil, which is the default in India, runs perfectly fine in the vast majority of automobiles and motorcycles. Then there are high-octane fuels, which can cost anywhere from 5 to 10% more than regular fuel.
Many gas stations instruct their personnel to fill the high-performance fuel without first asking which version to fill. If you catch them and question them, they’ll tell you that it’s up to you to decide which one you want right away.

Fraud #4 : Blocking your Mirror and Filling Oil to another Vehicle
This is a higher level of fraud perpetrated by some high-risk petrol pump employees. This is done to individuals who prefer to sit in the comfort of their cars and put their faith on gas stations.
In this situation, the individual filling your gas tank will show you the meter and set it to ZERO before approaching your left mirror and gasoline tank. He will stop at 200,300,500 or some other number while fuelling and will tell you numerous explanations for why he stopped, such as he will be there in 2 minutes or he has to bring a swipe machine or start the generator, etc. When he returns, he will resume where he left off.
Everything will appear to be normal; however, the secret is that just before he left, he was filling the oil in another vehicle (obviously another guy is involved). You were either on a phone conversation or listening to music, and your mirror was covered from seeing what was going on.
I suppose this is what happened to me lately while I was having a talk with a friend and was a little reckless (despite the fact that I had previously used the same fuel station!). pity on me)
Fraud #5Start-Stop Trick to create an air lock (Long Nozzle)
Frequently, the attendant does not lock the dispenser nozzle into the tank neck and manually presses the start and stop buttons repeatedly while filling the oil. This ensures that some oil is locked into the dispensing mechanism as a result of the air lock formed.
According to studies, for every 10 liters of oil saved, 200 ml of oil is saved. Which means that if you request a FULL Tank, you will most likely lose 500-750 ml, depending on the size of your tank.
A fair amount of oil stays in the nozzle even though the dispenser nozzle is lengthy.
It undoubtedly saves them dozens of liters of oil, which I and you are paying for, considering the thousands of liters of oil sold by a petrol pump every day.
The answer is straightforward. As soon as the auto-cutoff point is reached, make sure the attendant locks the nozzle and does not interrupt. Also, before removing the hosepipe from the tank, it should be raised as high as feasible.
Fraud #6Resetting the Meter to your final amount in between
Assume you asked the attendant to fill the gas tank for $2,000 in this technique. He starts filling the gas tank after showing you ZERO on the meter.
Everything appears to be in order. However, near the end, when the meter reads about 1600-1700 and you get the feeling that no one can scam you any longer, some random guy may bother you for various reasons, such as “Card, cash, “PUC,” “Lucky Draw,” and other similar options are available.
You’re already at ease because you’ve been cautious enough from the start “What could possibly go wrong now?
When your bill arrives, you check the meter, and it displays a total of Rs 2,000. You leave after paying the bill.
So, as the meter reached 1,700, you became distracted and focused on something else. The person who was filling the gasoline stopped and reset the meter to 2,000. (while the number of liters did not change).
We tend to focus solely on the dollar amount and ignore the quantity displayed. The meter amount blinks in this type of unlawful meter reset, which is a sign that it was reset incorrectly, according to certain websites where I researched this fraud.
Vivek shared his story of a similar situation in the comments section of an older piece.
What is the definition of “short fueling”?
The standard procedure is to manually intervene and stop the flow of fuel a few times (even when auto-cut is turned on) and then distribute the fuel in instalments/bursts. It was also discovered that the longer-than-required length of the fuel dispenser pipe leads to dealer savings.
What is the default setting in a gas station?
Whenever we visit a petrol station, we usually fill our tanks with Rs 100, 200, 300, 500, or 1000. These figures are pre-programmed in their machines. This is where they deceive us: most fuel pumps have these quantities pre-programmed on a single button, but they have already done something in their machinery while establishing these numbers. So, if you fill up with petrol worth Rs 100, the meter may read 100, but you may only have received petrol worth Rs 98.
To avoid this, fill your gas tank with a variety of numbers, such as 110, 120, 130, 210, and so on. This is an effective method for obtaining the full value of your money.

In Roblox, who is the hacker?
Lolet is a veteran ROBLOX hacker and scripter. For the first time, they appeared in a YouTuber game (Bloxnite). They were hacking the game and did things like sprint fast, go through walls, and so forth.
IoIet’s first account was leaked in 2010, while IoIet’s main account, Jo3y234, was released in August 2018. IoIet has started playing on Jo3y234 once more, and the user has since abandoned this account.
Is it against the law to not display fuel prices?
Petrol stations are required by law to post pricing notices on their premises. The Retail Price (Diesel and Petrol) Display Order, 1997 is the name of the law, and it is enforced by the CCPC.
You must post the prices of your gasoline and diesel on the side of the road closest to your business, and this price display must be legible and visible to potential clients. These announcements must have figures that are at least 20 cm high to the left of a decimal point.
- The costs for gasoline and diesel should be displayed per litre.
- Furthermore, the price you present must be the same as the amount you charge.
If the prices you charge for services or items differ from the rates indicated, you may be in violation of the Consumer Protection Act. If such violations are discovered, we have the authority to take enforcement action, including the issuance of a compliance notice.
