There are a variety of precautions that can be taken to protect yourself from the dangers of ethanol-blended gasoline. The first is that you can simply avoid it altogether. Shell and Esso 91, according to petroleum analyst Dan McTeague, are both ethanol-free. All of the companies’ other grades contain some ethanol, but the mid-grade blend is pure gas, which means it not only corrodes less than ethanol blends, but it also has a lower risk of deterioration when kept. Premium gas has the same amount of ethanol as other grades and doesn’t provide any more power or have any better additives than regular gas. Nothing more, nothing lessit just resists detonation (knock) better than lower-octane gas.
Although some brands use somewhat more detergent ingredient in their premium grades than in their other grades, all grades fulfill the EPA’s basic standards. What’s the bottom line? Shell is proud of its collaboration with Scuderia Ferrari on research and development. Ferrari is Shell’s major testing partner for fuel formulas and oils, and the partnership dates back to the early days of Formula One racing.
Dr. Cantlay revealed, “Shell V-Power is actually 99 percent the same as the gasoline compounds used by the Ferrari F1 team.” The fuels are so close currently that an F1 car could run on V-Power or a street car could run on F1 fuel. But that still doesn’t explain what kind of damage such fuel may cause in a typical car on the road.
Dr. Cantlay discussed a few important advantages of using V-Power over more traditional methods. Friction Modification Technology, which has been raised by 25% in the current formulation, is at the top of the list. When it comes to the inevitable loss of power due to heat and friction before you obtain your final power output, Dr. Cantlay of Scotland said, “You cannot change the laws of physics,” without a wink or a nudge to suggest he was riffing on a particular Star Trek engineer’s famous comments. In essence, this technology decreases power loss by reducing friction between important engine components, resulting in a higher final power output to move the car.
Second, V-Power contains cleaning and protecting ingredients that prevent carbon deposits from forming in the intake valves and fuel injectors while also clearing any existing deposits. It also functions as a corrosion preventative.
The Shell pitch is to use V-Power for the long haul in order to get the most out of your engine. However, for the vast majority of drivers, this will never be a factor. So, what are some of the advantages of more casual usage?
The friction modifiers are a quick-acting addition that improves performance while the engine is running on V-Power gasoline. This also means that if you switch back to a regular gasoline, the benefits will vanish just as rapidly.
On the other side, the cleaning technology has a longer-term benefit. Dr. Cantlay cited Shell tests as evidence that this improves performance in engines that have been running on regular fuel for a long time.
Shell V-Power can eliminate significant amounts of build up over the course of months of use. Even if you revert to regular fuels once this treatment has had a few months to increase engine cleanliness, there would be continuous benefits.
One hypothesis we came up with was that in the months preceding up to a driving vacation or any long road journey, you should use a fuel like Shell V-Power. If you’re planning a long vacation and want your car to function at its best, give the cleaning advantages some time to work their magic before you go.
Of all, there are so many variables at play that putting an exact percentage value on performance or power gains is impossible. So yet, all we have are Shell’s fuel feature descriptions and a personal “feel” for whether anything was different on the road.
To that aim, in my own 2005 Honda Civic sedan, my little guinea pig is putting the experience to the test by utilizing exclusively Shell V-Power fuel.
