To steal the title of a recent keynote talk by Walt Doyle, GasBuddy’s CEO, the industry has gone from “vice to pleasant.” Convenient options can now be healthy options, which is fantastic news whether you’re traveling for Labor Day, hurrying to get the kids to sports practice, or simply searching for a good lunch.
But how can one find their way through a convenience store? What should they be on the lookout for? Following these six simple steps, as someone who has visited over 1,000 convenience stores in 24 states, is my recommendation.
#1 Find the Cooler
Many of the healthier selections in convenience stores are found in open-air coolers. Salads, yogurts, fruit and vegetable trays, hard-boiled eggs, freshly prepared sandwiches, and other such items can be found there.
Coolers have become a common sight in supermarkets around the country. It’s realistic to assume an open-air cooler while visiting an individually operated business or a state-of-the-art Sheetz or Wawa.

The origin of the Shell moniker can be traced back to the seashells acquired from the Far East by Marcus Samuel senior in the late 1800s. Marcus junior and Samuel adopted Shell as the name for the kerosene they were shipping to Asia.
The name was chosen for the new import-export corporation established in 1897, the Shell Transport and Trading Company, when kerosene sales started to dominate the business’s turnover.
