There are now paddles to change gear behind the steering wheel, as if to emphasize how much more responsive it is. According to Burling, a new SUV model will be introduced in Australia next year, while the Rexton will be phased out in 2010. In addition, a four-door medium passenger car powered by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine will come in Australia in the second part of next year.
The front-wheel-drive car, which is based on the Rover 75, has Audi A4-like styling and will be equipped with DSI’s smooth six-speed auto gearbox. According to SsangYong insiders, it will share componentry with the recently launched Roewe 550.
Pricing for more than a year out is unknown, but Burling promises it will be “competitive.”
The parent company’s objective is that SsangYong vehicles would be offered with engines ranging from 1.6 to 5.0 litres within five years, but the Mercedes-inspired Chairman model is unlikely to return to Australia.
Burling said that Australian consumers are facing a “perfect storm” of interest rate hikes and spiraling fuel prices, and that the shift to more cost-effective diesel-powered vehicles is well underway, speaking during this week’s media review of SsangYong’s 2008 model line.
“The price of gasoline has an impact on everything we do,” he said, anticipating that sales of large cars will drop again in the following 90 days.
Furthermore, he estimated that within five years, high-efficiency turbo-diesels will power at least 70% of new SUVs sold in Australia.
As the popularity of new-generation clean diesels grows, the number of diesel-powered passenger vehicles (cars, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles) sold in Australia climbed by about 35% in 2007. Diesel passenger car and SUV sales increased by about 63 and 43 percent, respectively.
“The reality is that a diesel-powered SUV provides better driveability, fuel economy, and range while also being environmentally benign,” Burling said.

Engines that comply with Euro IV generate 98% less particulate matter and 33% less nitrous oxide (NOx) than those that comply with Euro III. Under Euro IV, diesel engines produce fewer than 0.02 grams of particulates per kilowatt-hour and 3.5 grams of NOx per kilowatt-hour.
Diesel engines will have to achieve a further 50% reduction in NOx emissions, to less than 2 grams per kilowatt-hour, under the next level of reductions (Euro V), which will be implemented throughout Europe in October next year.
Despite current higher diesel fuel prices at the pump, Burling claims that smaller diesels will be more cost-effective overall than their petrol-powered counterparts due to reduced usage per kilometer. DSI in Albury created and manufactures the most fuel-efficient SsangYong model, which has a 2.0-litre engine and six-speed automatic transmission.
According to Burling, the firm sold 200 vehicles in March 2008 and expects to sell 3000 by the end of the year. To do this, the company’s nationwide dealer count will increase to roughly 80 by the end of the year, with growth focused mostly in rural areas.
Burling anticipates the higher-specified models to account for 25 to 30 percent of SsangYong’s 2008 sales, as buyers “search for value, on tighter budgets” in a climate where aggressive discounting by dealers and manufacturers has muddled the market.
Burling, on the other hand, admits to being uninterested in the ultra-price-sensitive small-car sector, which he claims is unprofitable in Australia. He doesn’t think SsangYong would ever sell a vehicle with a smaller engine than two litres.
