Following the failures of the ill-fated 5.7L, underpowered 6.2L, and troubled 6.5L indirect injection (IDI) engines, GM knew their next diesel effort had to be a success. The Duramax was born by combining forces with Isuzu, a Japanese engine manufacturer. The first Duramax, RPO code LB7, would introduce aluminum cylinder heads to the diesel pickup industry, common-rail injection to the same market, and create power in a more cleaner, quieter manner than the competition (i.e. the 7.3L Power Stroke and the 24-valve 5.9L Cummins).

The LB7 Duramax had a lot more power right out of the gate than its competitors. The LB7 was king on paper, with 300hp and 520 lb-ft of torque (vs. 235hp and 500 lb-ft for the 7.3L Power Stroke and 235hp and 460 lb-ft for the 5.9L Cummins). It went about its business quietly and effectively in the real world, with many 3/4-ton Chevy and GMC HD owners reporting highway fuel economy of up to 22 mpg. Aside from the famed fuel injector difficulties, the LB7 proven to be one of the most dependable diesel engines ever made throughout time.
