Choose a fuel with the recommended cetane number for your diesel engine. The operating manual for your car or truck will tell you what cetane number or rating is best for your engine. By adjusting the ignition delay and minimizing the noise produced by the engine, choosing fuel with that cetane value will help minimize much of the loud diesel engine noise.
How do you reduce the sound of a diesel engine?
Although you won’t be able to totally eliminate the noise, you can use noise reduction techniques to lessen the volume of your car’s diesel engine by around 10 to 15 decibels. The following strategies for noise reduction are discussed:
- Use synthetic engine oil instead of ordinary mineral oil: Using synthetic engine oil instead of regular mineral oil can result in substantial improvements. Synthetic lubricants are more expensive than traditional engine oils, yet they are worthwhile. Better lubrication is provided by synthetic engine oils.
